MINERAL RESOURCES IN SAFANA LOCAL GOVERNMENT, IDENTIFIED BY THE COMMITTEE SET UP BY THE KATSINA STATE GOVERNOR BARRISTER IBRAHIM SHEHU SHEMA FOR THE PROMOTION OF INDUSTRIES IN THE STATE.

 

  1. KAOLIN : - Kaz of aluminous silicates, particularly of alkali-feldspar which is caused by either weathering or hydrothermal action.

Uses/Application

The unique properties of Kaolin have given it preference over other non-metallic minerals in many industries as follows: Paints, Chemicals, refractories, Ceramics, Pharmaceuticals industries, Paper, Rubber and Plastic, Suspending agent, fertilizer, Crayons etc.

RMRDC and KTSG has established a pharmaceuticals grade Plant at Kankara also KTSG and Private investors has established a Ceramic Grade Plant at Dutsin-ma. 

 

2.         MICA (MUSCOUVITE): - It is widely distributed in igneous rock.

Very good sheets of both transparent and black mica available.

Uses/Application

Electrical insulation, electronic U tubes, Capacitors, Pressing iron elements, Paper coatings, wet ground mica is used for reinforce solvent and aqueous system paints or increased weather ability, durability, greater resistance to moisture and atmospheric corrosion, used also as a mould lubricant in molded rubber products and in wall paper finishes, dry powder used in fire extinguishers, in oil well drilling mud etc.

The local government is traditionally an agricultural area both rainy and dry season farming is practiced in the Area. The industrial potential for Agriculture resources includes the following:

SORGHUM/MILLET

Used as food, production of baby foods, corn flakes, sorghum malt, extracted for used in confectioneries, production of livestock feeds, starch production for textiles and pharmaceuticals industries, stalk used in the production of saw dust cement floor tiles.

 

QUANTITY

Extremely large quantity is produced in the Local Government.

GROUND NUT

Used in the production of ground nut oil, butter, livestock feeds, ceiling particle board from pulverized ground nut shells, also used in confectioneries.

An estimate of 204,691 tones per annum in the State.

COTTON

Production of cotton lint’s for textile industries, production of livestock feeds/animal cake and cotton seed oil for cooking.
